About the Teacher

The Nixons with President Carter

This year Mr. Nixon is looking forward to his 6th year at Corinth Holders High and his 36th year
in the classroom. 
After graduating from Clayton
High School in 1973, Mr. Nixon attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship,
before graduating with High Honors from North Carolina State University with a B.A. in History. 
He later received a Masters in Education from
N. C. State, and has completed course work
towards a Ph.D.. He is a National Board Certified
Teacher and has served as a faculty consultant
for the College Board, participating in the
annual reading of the Advanced Placement US
History Exam from 1995 to 2007.  Over the past 35 years Mr. Nixon has taught at Athens Drive High School, South Johnston High School, and Clayton High School, spending 15 of those years coaching football.  Today he is retired from active sideline duty.

Mr. Nixon is a member of the National Education Association, the North Carolina Association of
Educators, the North Carolina Council for the
Social Studies, and the Organization of American Historians. He has just completed 3 terms as President of Johnston County Association of Educators and a a 3-year term as a member on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of Educators.  In 2000 he was honored as North Carolina's U.S. History Teacher of the Year by the Daughters of the American Revolution.  In 2001 Mr. Nixon was a member of the American delegation that traveled to Beijing to participate in the Sino-American Education Forum.  In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 he attended the National Education Association's Representative Assembly as a member of the North Carolina delegation.  In May, 2012 he was recognized as WRAL-TV's Teacher of the Week.
